Fresh Fruit;

Tasty Tomatoes

Knowledge, is knowing that tomatoes are fruit,

Wisdom is to know not to put them in a fruit salad!

The Aztec people called them 'tomatl', brought to Europe in the 16th century. The French called them 'Love apple', they were convinced they were an aphrodisiac. We, on average only eat 8kg per person per year, but the Italians eat over 50kg per person per year; perhaps we should eat more!  A proven fact though is that they contain large amounts of vitamin c and antioxidants and unlike other vegetables and fruit are better for you when cooked (antioxidants can help fight heart disease).

Tomato varieties we are growing this year:-

Floridity a sweet medium sized tomato in an RHS orgonised survey rated as the best tasting tomato

Juliet very tasty and hardy deserving more culinary attention

Sungold a dark red sweet tomato with a low acid content.

Sweet Million a small cherry size tomato, very sweet when naturally ripened in the sun. Thin skinned which splits easily especially when warmed too quickly.

Golden Sunrise a medium sized sweet tomato, adds another colour to your salad naturally.

Shirley    A tasty medium sized variety. The Royal Horticultural Society suggest this should be well suited to our western Isles climate.

Tigerella (often known as Mr Stripey). This one's for the young at heart, a stripped medium sized tomato that will add interest to any salad. Nicely sweet when ripened naturally in the sun.  Nick-named [Mr Stripey]

These tomatoes are growing in recycled glass (Siar Glass)

Starting in 2006 and still using the same process with  great success we use this method (and a lot less work! ) See page 'growing in siar-glass'
