Autumn: what's to do?

Season of mist and mellow fruitfulness? Time to sit back and let winter come No way!

Use every fine hour, get the ground dug but not if you live in a high rainfall area. The winter rains will wash away plant nutrients. Leave the digging till March / April.  The Poly tunnel needs cleaning out. Use the time to empty all the dead plants; wash pots to get rid of disease and bugs eggs; just washing up liquid and warm water will get rid of most. Then keep them dry and ready for use you will have no time in the spring.

Don't prune the Grape vine. leave it till December / January then  allow only one shoot per node (leaf joint). Make sure it is well tied to the support wires, 25 bunches of grapes are a heavy load.

Keep leaves swept up especially in Greenhouses and poly tunnels. Burn any that have disease or bugs on them.

Locally grown Pansies and primula plants are available on the Lewis & Harris Horticultural producers Stall every Saturday morning. (See the web site www.stornowayfarmersmarket.co.uk   Contact us for details
